From IMSA: Carolyn Johnson

Excused: Jeremy Schulze

Absent:

The meeting was called to order at ____ PM CST.

Budget Update

Art shared that we’re running ahead of budget (spending less money than we expected) so there should be funding available for all initiatives and provided a copy of the current budget to all cabinet members.

  • Highlights
    • Fundraising - Matthew is passing the baton to Art on this committee. Art promised to follow up shortly with the fundraising team on the great ideas people have shared.
    • IMSA Fund - The IMSA fund is focused on creating a culture of giving among alumni. Art suggested that the cabinet can incorporate some of their thoughts into the Fundraising discussion.

Intersession

College, Career, Choices Forums

Amy said that due to coordination issues, there will be 3 sessions in spring. Amy still is working to solidify dates and topics. Heena suggested doing a session on people who changed career paths. Amy aid she would consider that as one of the topics.

Action Plans

Matthew stated that there were three areas that need focus to get underway and asked for cabinet members to assist in supporting these efforts:

  • Projects that need to get going
    • Alumni advising
    • College visit coordination
    • Fundraising

IAA Retreat

Matthew asked whether cabinet members still would like to have a retreat. Matthew said that he thought it would be valuable because the retreats often generate new ideas. Heena said it would be a good way for cabinet members to get to know each other and also improve connections to IMSA. Carolyn said the retreat can help the group talk through difficult issues and get to know people. She suggested doing one mid-year to let people talk through current status and what could be improved. Matthew will send out an email asking when people will be available in early 2010.

Technology

Kevin stated that he and Ande need to work together in person to work through website redesign issues. He ran into a couple of hiccups when trying to migrate the website and is planning to talk with Neal Groothuis to get help. He also talked with Jim Gerry and learned that the student ACA is interested in purchasing the rack, but not server. Carolyn promised to check on legal restrictions in selling the IAA server and rack.

Regional Events

Carolyn stated that the St. Louis event was a success with $500 paid for a whole dinner for 40 alums. Most of the alumni is attendance were younger alums currently attending Wash U and SLU. There was one alum from '90, Mike Peil, who is a professor at WashU. There also was one parent who attended.

Carolyn said that the Champaign-Urbana event was the Northwestern-UIUC football game. The IAA bought 25 tickets, and then sold the tickets at a subsidized price because the IAA did not provide food for a tailgate party as was done last year at the game at Northwestern because facilities were not available. Melanie Kuehn '98 hosted a casual event afterwards at her home. About 40 people attended the party afterwards, including several alums who could not attend the game. Carolyn observed that here was a clear distinction between older alums and younger alums at the party. She said that we need to find a way to cross the age divide, especially as the age range of alums increases.

In a related topic, Lina Naik '93 would like to pursue professional networking. This is something the IAA has considered but has not been able to follow through on.

Matthew requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ande moved to close the meeting. The motion was seconded by Heena.
