The meeting was called to order at 7:40 PM CST.

Intersession

Thirty-two alumni returned to teach at Intersession 2010. While this is a decrease from last year's record participation of 49 alumni, Intersession was later so it is guessed that many college-age alums were not available because they already were back at school. In a change from previous years, alums were allowed to invite a staff member to the IAA-hosted luncheon on Wednesday; however, only half of alums participating in Intersession attended the lunch. A follow-up survey will be taken of alumni who participated in Intersession to determine what can be improved for next year and if the lunch is deemed to be a value-added event.

Project Review

College, Career, Choices Forum

The most recent CCC forum was held over Intersession week with eight alums participating in the panel. Six of the alums went to UIUC, which was the focus for the event. In addition, non-UIUC alums Michael Massey and Winn Wasson participated in talking about general college experience. Rakesh observed that the alumni represented the spectrum of alumni, except that there were no females in attendance. Still, the alums answered a lot of questions from the 35 students who signed in for the event. Carolyn noted that student groups did the marketing for the event, which gave them some ownership and a stake in getting other students to attend.

University Host Program

No discussion because Jonathan could not attend. Matthew promised to follow up wit him after the meeting to determine if there are any additional needs for the program for this year.

Alumni Siblings Program

Sam, Matthew and Lauraleigh Heffner '10 are scheduling a call to review status on the program.

Fundraising

Art has scheduled a call on February 26 to coordinate the efforts and plans to increase alumni participation. Carolyn noted that only half the cabinet has donated for the 2009-10 fiscal year and that she will follow up with those who have not yet given. Winn suggested that perhaps there should be a targeted giving effort for alumni to support a specific project or item to give alumni something to identify with their donations (sort of like for the Red Cross Haiti effort).

Regional Events

The NYC event is scheduled for Saturday, January 23. The Atlanta event is scheduled for January 29. The Atlanta event will be a less formal cocktail event at a hotel in Atlanta. The Austin event is scheduled for February 27. The San Francisco event is scheduled for April 10. Carolyn also noted that there could be an event in Research Triangle, NC with Cathy Veal. Also, a Chicago event will be in the spring although no scheduling or venue details have been established yet.

A memorial Club Pseudo event was held at IMSA for former IAA cabinet member and IMSA staff member Scott Swanson '90 last weekend. Over 200 people attended, mainly alums (including Kevin and Amy) and a few others of Scott's family and friends. Kevin observed that the technology was outstanding, allowing the event to be streamed live. Kevin also said it was impressive and amazing event. Amy agreed and further noted that said that Dr. Marshall gave an amazing speech recognizing Scott and his connection to IMSA. Amy also relayed that Dr. Marshall referred to Club Pseudo as the soul of IMSA. A memorial fund is being established at IMSA to support technology to honor Scott. Carolyn also noted that the Class of 1990 will honor Scott at their 20-year reunion this summer.

IAA Logo

Matthew noted that the IAA asked for new IAA logo proposals in the spring of 2009, but only two people submitted proposals. Due to the lack of submissions, Carolyn now is moving forward with Casie Perry '96, who is a professional graphic designer to develop a new IAA logo. Carolyn talked through ideas with Casie and Casie has put forward four logo proposals. Carolyn sent out these proposals to the cabinet this week and asked that responses to these first proposals be submitted to her by Friday (January 22). The targeted schedule is to have the logo design complete so that it can be incorporated into the Alumni Weekend invitations that are due to be sent out by the end of February. Discussion among those in attendance at the meeting favored ideas 5 and 7. Carolyn also noted that newer colors in the logo will reduce future printing costs.

myIMSA

Carolyn brought forward a proposal to open up myIMSA to current and retired staff members. Functionality already has been created to permit staff to be added, but it is not currently turned on. Carolyn noted that she currently shares information from myIMSA with staff members for the good of IMSA. She also noted that if staff were added to myIMSA, it would be a completely a manual process, ensuring control of who was permitted to participate. Kevin commented that the addition of staff would inevitably rankle some alumni. He also asked how it would be determined what information would be available and if alumni can choose whether or not to share information with staff. Carolyn said she would have to follow up. Ande asked how it would be determined what staff members could have access. Carolyn said she would have to talk with IMSA HR to ask about good standing status to establish which former staff members would be permitted to participate.

Discussion

Ande noted that there is an event scheduled at IMSA on February 2 to bring female engineering and physical science alums to interact with current female students. Amy observed that it might by possible to coordinate a related CCC event. Ande agreed to forward information about the event to Amy so she could determine if a coordinating CCC event was possible.

Carolyn extended kudos to Kevin for helping to donate the former IAA server and rack to a student group and being able to move so quickly to turn it around. Kevin noted that he was very pleased with how things turned out and extended a thanks to former cabinet member Neal Groothuis '97 for helping with the transition of the last of the information on the server to the new remote hosting service.

Matthew noted that the IAA retreat will be held on Saturday, February 20.

Matthew noted that when he was at IMSA in November, a staff member asked him about his opinion of transferring work service time to community service time. Matthew observed that he thought this could become a stink with some members of the alumni community and that he would reach out and follow up to gauge alumni opinion of this idea.

Carolyn noted that IMSA Preview Day is this Saturday, January 23 and that alumni volunteers are still needed. She asked the cabinet to reach out to local alums to try to get assistance.

Matthew requested a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:50 PM CST. Winn moved to close the meeting. The motion was seconded by Ande.
